FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil – Brazilian military pilots spotted an airplane seat, an orange buoy, and other debris and signs of fuel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday as they hunted for a missing Air France jet that carried 228 people.

Brazil’s Navy said three commercial ships in the area were joining the search and France said it would send a ship capable of deep-water exploration.

The pilots spotted two areas of floating debris — but no signs of life — about 60 kilometers (35 miles) apart, about 410 miles (650 kilometers) beyond the Brazilian archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, near Flight 447’s path from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, said Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral.

“The locations where the objects were found are toward the right of the point where the last signal of the plane was emitted,” Amaral said. “That suggests that it might have tried to make a turn, maybe to return to Fernando de Noronha, but that is just a hypothesis.”

Amaral said some of the debris was white and small, but did not describe it in more detail.

Two commercial ships that joined the search late Tuesday morning reached sites where the debris was found, said a Navy spokeswoman. They were searching for the items spotted by the plane while the third was still en route, said the spokeswoman who spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with department rules.

“Once they come across the objects, they will be analyzed to determine if they are parts of the plane or just junk,” she said.

A U.S. Navy P-3 surveillance plane arrived in Brazil Tuesday morning to help if needed, U.S. Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said.

The French minister overseeing transportation, Jean-Louis Borloo, has dispatched to the debris site a research ship that can deploy unmanned submarines to explore depths of up to 6,000 meters (19,600 feet). The U.S. also was considering contributing unmanned underwater vehicles in the search, according to a defense source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

The discovery of debris came more than 24 hours after the jet went missing, with all feared dead.

Rescuers were still scanning a vast sweep of ocean extending from far off northeastern Brazil to waters off West Africa. The 4-year-old plane was last heard from at 0214 GMT Monday (10:14 p.m. EDT Sunday).

If no survivors are found, it would be the world’s worst civil aviation disaster since the November 2001 crash of an American Airlines jetliner in the New York City borough of Queens that killed 265 people.

Investigators on both sides of the ocean are trying to determine what brought the Airbus A330 down, with few clues to go on so far. Potential causes could include violently shifting winds and hail from towering thunderheads, lightning or some combination of other factors.

The crew gave no verbal messages of distress before the crash, but the plane’s system sent an automatic message just before it disappeared, reporting lost pressure and electrical failure. The plane’s cockpit and “black box” recorders could be thousands of feet (meters) below the surface.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said that if the debris is confirmed to be part of Flight 447, “This will allow us to better determine the search zone.”

“We are in a race against the clock in extremely difficult weather conditions and in a zone where depths reach up to 7,000 meters,” he told lawmakers in the lower house of French parliament Tuesday. Black box recorders can emit signals for up to 30 days.

The chance of finding survivors now “is very very small, even nonexistent,” said the French minister overseeing transportation, Jean-Louis Borloo.

Borloo called the A330 “one of the most reliable planes in the world” and said lightning alone, even from a fierce tropical storm, probably couldn’t have brought down the plane.

“There really had to be a succession of extraordinary events to be able to explain this situation,” Borloo said on RTL radio Tuesday.

French military spokesman Christophe Prazuck said France could shift its search operations closer to the site of the Brazilian discovery “to help them map all the debris on the sea.”

France has three military patrol aircraft flying over the central Atlantic from their base in Senegal and it is sending an AWACS radar plane that should join the operation on Wednesday, he said.

French police were studying passenger lists and maintenance records, and preparing to take DNA from passengers’ relatives to help identify any bodies.

France’s Defense Minister Herve Morin said “we have no signs so far” of terrorism, but all hypotheses must be studied.

Alain Bouillard, who led the probe into the crash of the Concorde in July 2000, was put in charge of France’s accident investigation team.

President Barack Obama told French television stations the United States is ready to do everything necessary to find out what happened.

On board the flight were 61 French citizens, 58 Brazilians, 26 Germans, nine Chinese and nine Italians. A lesser number of citizens from 27 other countries also were on the passenger list.

The two Americans on board were a 60-year-old geologist Michael Harris and his 54-year-old wife, Anne, residents of Rio de Janeiro who were headed to Europe for work and vacation. They lived previously in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Among the passengers were three young Irish doctors, returning from two-week vacation in Brazil. Aisling Butler’s father John paid tribute to his 26-year-old daughter, from Roscrea, County Tipperary.

“She was a truly wonderful, exciting girl. She never flunked an exam in her life — nailed every one of them — and took it all in her stride,” he said.

The Airbus A330-200 was cruising normally at 35,000 feet (10,670 meters) and 522 mph (840 kph) just before it disappeared nearly four hours into the flight. No trouble was reported as the plane left radar contact, beyond Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

But just north of the equator, a line of towering thunderstorms loomed. Bands of extremely turbulent weather stretched across the Atlantic toward Africa.

France’s junior minister for transport, Dominique Bussereau, said the plane sent “a kind of outburst” of automated messages just before it disappeared, “which means something serious happened, as eventually the circuits switched off.”

The pilot had 11,000 hours of flying experience, including 1,700 hours flying this aircraft.

The legislature held a moment of silence to honor the victims and the French soccer team will wear black arm bands and hold a moment of silence ahead of a match against Nigeria on Tuesday night.

Review:

Gran Torino (2008)
Do you miss Archie Bunker? Are you curious to find out how Carroll O’Connor’s stone-cold bigot would have reacted to our current, culturally diverse society? And did you ever dream of seeing racist old Archie packing heat as he spewed bile all over the “spooks,” “gooks,” and other non-Caucasians who were unlucky enough to cross his path? Then Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino is the movie for you.

Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) served his time in the military, paid his dues at the auto plant, and wants to spend his days as a widower in peace. He is disgusted by his ignorant, oafish sons and their selfish children, the ugliest characters you’ll see on screen this year. But his disdain isn’t limited to kin. Walt also hates the “egg roll,” “fish-head” “Charlie Chans” who’ve moved into his blue-collar Detroit suburb.

Walt’s worst nightmare comes true one evening when Thao (Bee Vang), a painfully shy Hmong teenager, tries to steal the old man’s vintage Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation. Walt catches Thao in the act, bringing shame to the family. To pay off the debt, Thao begins shadowing Walt so he can learn to grow up and be a man (translation: hate people with a passion).

This odd-couple pairing has powered many a comedy, but the laughs in Gran Torino are unintentional. Eastwood plays his material very seriously and I believe he thinks we’ll be moved as Thao accepts more responsibility and Walt grows less intolerant. But the storytelling is plodding and ham-fisted, and Gran Torino ends up spinning its wheels.

Eastwood does do something unique in Gran Torino: he surrounds himself with rank amateurs, from “intimidating” gangbangers straight out of central casting to his neighbors who, in time, will learn to respect the curmudgeon living next door. Vang, in particular, is shockingly blasé and uncomfortable delivering lines. Character actor John Carroll Lynch, meanwhile, is miscast as Walt’s racist barber. And I felt sorry for apple-cheeked Christopher Carley, who plays an optimistic parish priest. Carley’s character serves two purposes: Eastwood seems to enjoy talking down to whippersnapper cast members and the idea of challenging religion has become a constant through the director’s recent pictures.

But Nick Schenk has penned a graceless and insensitive script littered with clunkers that are meant to pass as life lessons handed down from one generation to the next. “Sounds like you know more about death than you do living,” Carley’s priest utters to Walt over drinks at the local watering hole. (Where, coincidentally, the men gather during the day to share racist jokes.) And in return, Clint squints. It’s pretty much his lone response through much of Gran Torino, until the credits, when he sings the film’s theme song. That’s when you’ll wince.

When we think of holes, most of us think of digging a hole to plant a flower, drilling a hole to finish a construction project, or even hitting a hole in one at the next golf outing. There are places in the world, however, that give the word “hole” a whole new meaning. These holes are so large it would be hard to believe they were real if you weren’t able to see them.

Kimberley Big Hole, South Africa

Kimberley Big Hole

Kimberly Big Hole, located in South Africa, was a diamond mine over 1,097 meters deep. The mine was closed in 1914 but was later reopened as a tourist attraction. The site is now a major tourist attraction, featuring a bar, small hotel, shops, and eateries - all in the same area that these things would have been located while the mine was active.

Workers will be dressed in period garb and visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a simulation complete with dynamite blasts and dusty explosions – all designed to give visitors a feel for what it was like living in mine town.

Glory Hole – Monticello Dam, California

Glory Hole – Monticello Dam

The Monticello Dam, which holds back Lake Berryessa, features a morning glory spillway. This type of spillway is basically a giant cement funnel. Rather than spilling over the dam, high waters spill into the funnel. Morning glory spillways are also known as bell-mouth spillways.

Monticello Dam view of spillway

The Monticello Dam’s spillway is otherwise (and affectionately) known as The Glory Hole. The glory hole is located about 200 feet from the dam. Water spills over its lip when the lake reaches 1,602,000 acre-feet. The funnel’s largest diameter is 72 feet and narrows to about 28 feet. It is designed to handle a maximum of 362,000 gallons of water per second, which occurs when the lake level rises to 15.5 feet above the level of the funnel. For more information about the glory hole (as well as photos of its construction in the 1950’s).

An Aerial View of the Glory Hole – Monticello Dam

For obvious reasons, swimming near the glory hole is both prohibited and stupid. There are buoys strung across the lake to discourage boaters and swimmers from approaching the glory hole and the dam. Furthermore, the glory hole is well fenced off from the land.

Rumors claim that a woman jumped down the hole thinking she would come out the other end but never lived to tell the tale – I’ve seen no proof, so take that story or leave it.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

Bingham Canyon Mine-Utah

The Bingham Canyon Mine (image center) is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, measuring over 4 kilometers wide and 1,200 meters deep. Located about 30 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, the mine exploits a porphyry copper deposit, a geological structure formed by crystal-rich magma moving upwards through pre-existing rock layers. As the magma cools and crystallizes, it forms an igneous rock with large crystals embedded in a fine-grained matrix, known as a porphyry. Hot fluids circulate through the magma and surrounding rocks via fractures, depositing copper-bearing and other minerals in spatial patterns that a geologist recognizes as a potential porphyry copper deposit.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

Mining first began in Bingham Canyon in the late nineteenth century, when shafts were sunk to remove gold, silver, and lead deposits that played out by the early 1900s. It would take the advent of open-pit mining in 1899 to turn the Bingham copper deposit into an economically favorable resource. In open-pit mining, the copper-containing rocks are excavated from the surface downward in terraces. By the 1930s, open-pit mining had turned “the Hill” at Bingham Canyon into “the Pit.”

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

This astronaut photograph of the Bingham Canyon Mine shows parallel benches (stepped terraces) along the western pit face. These benches range from 16 to 25 meters high, and they provide access for equipment to work the rock face and maintaining the stability of the sloping pit walls. A dark, larger roadway is also visible directly below the benches. Brown to gray, flat-topped hills of gangue (waste rock) surround the pit, and are thrown into sharp relief by shadows and the oblique (from the side) viewing angle of the photograph. Reservoirs for leach water (associated with ore processing) are visible to the south of the city of Bingham Canyon.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

Today’s copper market is booming thanks to global demands from construction, telecommunications, and electronics sectors of the economy. The Kennecott Utah Copper Company removes about half a million tons of material from the Bingham Canyon Mine every day for processing. In 1906, the rate of removal was 100,000 tons of material per month. Over 17 million tons of copper have been removed to date. Geological and engineering models suggest that the mine can be deepened by an additional 200 meters before extraction costs become greater than the value of the remaining copper.

Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

The geological and chemical processes that produce copper deposits also produce minerals such as iron sulfides, which react with water or oxygen on the surface to produce colorful minerals.

Geologists can sometimes use satellite observations to identify places where the topography and the rock types on the surface suggest copper ores might be present below ground.

Great Blue Hole, Belize

Great Blue Hole, Belize

The Great Blue Hole is a large underwater sinkhole off of the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, over 300 metres (984 ft) across and 120 metres (394 ft) deep. It was formed as a limestone cave system during the last ice age when sea levels were much lower. As the ocean began to rise again, the caves flooded, and the roof collapsed. It is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.

Great Blue Hole, Belize

On-shore caves of similar formation, as large collapsed sinkholes, are well known in Belize.

This site was made famous by Jacques-Yves Cousteau who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world.

In 1971, he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths. Investigations by this expedition confirmed the hole’s origin as typical Karst limestone formations, formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages, leaving ledges at depths of 21, 49 and 91 meters (69, 161 and 299 ft). Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level. Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 10°-13° in a consistent orientation, thus indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane.

This is a popular spot amongst recreational scuba divers, who are lured by the opportunity to dive in crystal clear water and meet several species of fish, including giant groupers, nurse sharks and several types of reef sharks, such as the Caribbean Reef Shark or the Blacktip Shark.

Other species of sharks, like the bull shark or hammerheads, have been reported there, but are not regular sightings. Usually, dive trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips, which include one dive in the Blue Hole and two further dives in nearby reefs.

A giant sinkhole opened in Guatemala City on February 24, 2007 and swallowed about a dozen homes. Officials said the 100 meter deep (330 feet deep) sinkhole in a crowded neighborhood of poor, concrete homes was caused by recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main.

Chuquicamata, or “Chuqui” as it is more familiarly known, is a large open pit copper mine in the north of Chile, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago.

For many years it was the mine with the largest annual production in the world but was recently overtaken by Minera Escondida. Nevertheless it remains the mine with by far the largest total production of approximately 29 million tonnes of copper to the end of 2007 (excluding Radomiro Tomić).

Chuquicamata panorama, Chile

Despite over 90 years of intensive exploitation it remains one of the largest known copper resources. Its open pit is one of the largest at 4.3 km long, 3 km wide and over 850 m deep and its smelter and electrolytic refinery (855,000 tonnes p.a.) are amongst the world’s largest. Chuquicamata is also a significant producer of molybdenum.

Top 10 Poisonous Plants..

Spring is in the the air, and blossoms and bulbs are beginning to bloom. Though deceptively attractive, some common flowers and plants can give you headaches, cause convulsions or simply kill you, according to the “Handbook of Poisonous and Injurious Plants” (Springer, 2007). Children under 6 are especially vulnerable; they account for 85 percent of all calls to poison centers, though the most commonly consumed culprits in poison cases are cosmetics, personal care products, cleansers and pills. Most plants are safe, but here are some you need to know about. They might be in your own yard or even in the house.

10.Narcissus

Narcissus 'Mondragon'

These cheerful yellow and white harbingers of spring, aka daffodils and jonquils, are actually mildly toxic if the bulbs are eaten in large quantities (Narcissus pseudonarcissus is shown). Some people confuse them for onions. Daffodil bulb diners tend to experience nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea. A doctor might recommend intravenous hydration and/or drugs to stave off nausea and vomiting if symptoms are severe or the patient is a child.

9.Rhododendron

Rhododendron repens

Rhododendrons and azalea bushes (a variety of rhododendron), with their bell-shaped flowers, look great in the yard come springtime, but the leaves are toxic and so is honey made from the flower nectar. Eating either from these evergreen shrubs makes your mouth burn , and then you’ll probably experienced increased salivation, vomiting, diarrhea and a tingling sensation in the skin. Headaches, weak muscles and dim vision could follow. Your heart rate could slow down or beat strangely, and you might even drop into a coma and undergo fatal convulsions. Before that, doctors will try to replace your fluids and help you breath more easily and administer drugs to bring back your normal heart rhythm.

8.Ficus

Ficus

Also known as weeping fig, benjamin tree, or small-leaved rubber plants, all ficus have milky sap in their leaves and stems that is toxic. There are about 800 species of ficus trees, shrubs and vines (Ficus benjamina is shown), many of which are cultivated indoors in pots and tubs and outdoors in warm areas where some varieties can grow to up to 75 feet tall. The worst that will happen is your skin will itch and puff up and your doctor will give you something for the allergy or the inflammation.

7.Oleander

Nerium oleander

Every bit of the oleander plant is toxic, unlike the case for other plants where just the flower or sap might be poisonous. Even accidental inhalation of the smoke from burning oleander is a problem. Other trouble comes from using the sticks for weenie or marshmallow roasts or drinking water in which the clusters of red, pink or white flowers have been placed. These evergreen shrubs (Nerium oleander is shown) are common as tub plants or in gardens in the Southwest and California, any locale that approaches the plant’s native Mediterranean climate. Typically the symptoms involve a change in heart rate, be it a slow down or palpitations or high potassium levels. A doctor might prescribe a drug to bring your heartbeat back under control and try to induce vomiting with ipecac, pump your stomach or absorb the toxin with ingested charcoal.

6.Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum

Also known as mums, orange and yellow varieties of these showy flowers often turn up in foil-wrapped pots on people’s front steps around Halloween and Thanksgiving. There are 100 to 200 species of Chrysanthemums, and they generally grow low to the ground, but can turn into shrubs. Gardeners plant mums to keep rabbits away. Guess what? The flower heads are somewhat toxic to humans too. But not terribly. Touching them can make you itch and puff up a bit, but probably the doctor will just give you something for the inflammation and allergic reaction.

5.Anthurium

Anthurium

The leaves and stems of these bizarre-looking plants, with dark green, heart-shaped leathery leaves and a scarlet, white or green spike surrounded by a red, pink or white “spathe,” are toxic. Also known as flamingo flowers or pigtail plants, eating tropical Anthuriums could give you a painful burning sensation in the mouth that then swells and blisters. Your voice might also become hoarse and strained and you might have difficulty swallowing. Most of this will fade with time, but cool liquids, pain pills and gluey herbs and foods like licorice or flax seeds may bring relief.

4.Lily-of-the-valley

Lily of the Valley

These darling droopers, also known as mayflowers, are entirely poisonous, from the tips of their tiny bell-shaped white flowers that coyly fall off like parted hair to the very water in which they might be placed. A little bit of Lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis) probably won’t hurt much, but if you eat a lot, you’ll probably experience nausea, vomiting, pain in the mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhea and cramps. Your heart rate might also become slow or irregular. A doctor might decide to clean out your stomach by pumping it or feeding you absorbing charcoal, and might give you drugs to bring your heart rate back to normal.

3.Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla

These poofy-flowered bushes (Hydrangea macrophylla) are popular yard ornaments that can grow up to 15 feet tall with rose, deep blue or greenish-white flowers that grow in huge clusters and look as edible as cotton candy or a big bun to an imaginative mind. But those blooms will give you a belly ache that sets in sometimes hours after eaten. Typically, patients also experience itchy skin, vomiting, weakness and sweating. Some reports indicate that patients can even experience coma, convulsions and a breakdown in the body’s blood circulation. Luckily, there is an antidote for hydrangea poisoning, and doctors might also give you drugs to address to ease your symptoms.

2.Foxglove

Foxglove

Foxglove is a magical looking plant that grows to 3 feet tall with drooping purple, pink or white flowers, sometimes dotted inside, along a central stalk. Its Latin name is Digitalis purpurea, which might sound familiar; leaves from the plant are a commercial source of the heart drug digitalis. If you eat any part of these plants in the wild, you too will likely have heart problems after a spell of nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea and pain in the mouth. A doctor might administer charcoal to absorb the toxin or pump your stomach, and might also administer drugs to bring your heart rate back to normal. Other names for this plant include fairy bells, rabbit flower, throat wort and witches’ thimbles.

1.Wisteria

Wisteria floribunda

Wisterias form romantic cascades of sweetpea-like flowers that fall in lush blue, pink or white masses from woody vines that grow mainly in the South and Southwest. The entire plant, also known as a kidney bean tree, is toxic, though some say the flowers are not. Better safe than sorry, because most reports are that eating this plant will cause nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea that could require treatments such as intravenous hydration and anti-nausea pills.

WASHINGTON : Barack Obama launched his presidency before an estimated 1.5 million people on the National Mall on Tuesday with somber yet confident tones, saying the country will overcome its serious economic and international challenges.

“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real,” Obama said in his inaugural address. “They are serious, and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America: They will be met.”

US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle walk down Pennsylvania Avenue during the inaugural parade in Washington

Obama’s tempered optimism, however, was book ended by celebration in the Mall and across the country for the inauguration of the country’s first African-American president.

“This is America happening,” said Evadey Minott, a Brooklyn, New York, resident who witnessed the inauguration.

Obama’s address came before a crowd that had been building since 4 a.m. Tuesday down the National Mall. People sang, danced and waved flags as his swearing-in approached.

US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama walk past the reviewing stand set up near the White House for the inaugural parade

Many in the crowd seemed moved as Aretha Franklin belted out a rousing version of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” before Joe Biden was sworn in as vice president.

Wearing a navy suit and red tie, Obama repeated the oath of office, his hand on the same Bible used in President Abraham Lincoln’s first inauguration.

When Obama took the podium, however, the jubilant crowd grew somber and quiet, hanging on his every word. There was only scattered applause — punctuated by an occasional “That’s right” or “Amen.”

Obama thanked those who sacrificed so much so “a man whose father, less than 60 years ago, might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.”

He promised to end petty squabbles on Capitol Hill, bring “old friends and former enemies” into the fold, and invoked the Bible, saying, “The time has come to set aside childish things.”

He also vowed to leave Iraq to its people, responsibly, and to finish forging “a hard-earned peace” in Afghanistan. To Muslims, he promised “a new way forward, based on mutual interest,” and to terrorists, he leveled a threat: “You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.”

The challenges are daunting, he said, but anyone who underestimates this nation has forgotten about its past perseverance.

“Greatness is never a given. It must be earned,” he said.

Barack Obama takes the oath as the 44th US president with Michelle by his side

His words resounded with spectators and revelers who let out deafening cheers after his address. Spectator L.J. Caldwell likened Obama to some of the most heroic figures of the civil rights movement.

“When you think back, Malcolm [X] fought, then we come a little further. Rosa Parks sat, then come up a little further, and [the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.] spoke. Then today, President Obama ran and we won,” said Caldwell, of Somerset, New Jersey.

Celebrations weren’t limited to Washington. Across the country, friends and strangers gathered on the streets and in schools, bars and auditoriums to witness Obama’s inauguration, united in their hope that he will deliver on his promise of change.

In New York’s Bronx borough, students huddled in the halls of a school to watch the ceremony on a projection screen.

“They were cheering; they were clapping; they were in awe because everything we had talked about, they were able to see,” teacher Marta Rendon said.

Malia (L) and Sasha Obama watch the inaugural parade from their father's viewing stand

Leaders around the world offered their congratulations. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the United States expressed “its resolve to have an open, new, strong and caring America.”

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Obama is “the hope of our time.”

After Obama’s address, hundreds of thousands remained on Washington’s National Mall as Obama entered the Capitol and signed his first documents as the 44th president of the United States. Among those were his Cabinet nominations. The Senate approved most of those nominations later in the day.

Obama then lunched with lawmakers at the Capitol’s Statuary Hall, telling them, “What’s happening today is not about me. It is about the American people.”

Later, Obama’s motorcade carried him past barricaded crowds along Pennsylvania Avenue toward the White House. He and his family watched the rest of the parade in a reviewing stand outside the White House. The president and first lady then began the rounds of 10 official inaugural balls scheduled over the course of the evening.

Many said before the festivities that they did not have tickets and would be happy to catch a mere glimpse of the nation’s first African-American president. Some spectators were more than a mile from the swearing-in ceremony, watching on giant TV screens erected along the National Mall.

At St. John’s Episcopal Church, where the Obamas kicked off a packed day, 9-year-old Laura Bruggerman waited with her mother, Wendy, and father, Jeff, of Bethesda, Maryland. The affable crowd tried to let shorter onlookers and children to the front for better views.

“I want to see Obama. I think that would be really cool. I could tell all of my friends that I got to see him,” the youngster said.

Security was tight in Washington. However, no arrests related to the inauguration were reported as of Tuesday evening, an FBI spokesman said.

The ceremony also drew celebrities like Dustin Hoffman, Denzel Washington and Steven Spielberg.

“It’s behind the dream. We’re just here feeling it with the throngs of people. It’s amazing grace personified,” Oprah Winfrey said, sitting next to actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Obama and congressional leaders formally bade farewell to Bush, and the now-former president took a presidential jet to Midland, Texas, shortly afterward.

As Obama and his wife, Michelle, made their way to the White House, they stepped out of their limousine amid another round of boisterous hoorahs.

The first couple beamed as they walked down Pennsylvania Avenue, waving to the throngs kept back by police barriers. They walked a few blocks before returning to their vehicle to finish the two-mile parade that took them to the White House.

“I have a sneaky suspicion that Barack and Michelle will be out and about on the streets of Washington [during his term]. … You’ll see them again,” said Tracy Miller, who was watching the Obamas.

After arriving at the White House, Obama and his family watched the rest of the inauguration parade from a reviewing stand.

Additionally, restaurants will be allowed to stay open twenty-four hours a day for the entire four day period. Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies Chairperson, Senator Dianne Feinstein and committee member Senator Robert Foster Bennett felt that the original 5 am liquor curfew and twenty-four hour food service would be a strain on law enforcement resources. The Council of the District of Columbia passed the extended curfews as emergency legislation proposed by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington.

Security..

The District of Columbia police force doubled to 8,000 with police officers from around the United States added to the force for additional security.
The 56th Inaugural Parade then made its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the U.S. Capitol to the White House

Inaugural Luncheon..

Before the luncheon, President Obama entered an office in the Capitol building where he signed his first Presidential orders, per tradition. The first order was a proclamation “declaring a day of national renewal and reconciliation.” During the historic signing, he joked about his left-handedness, and also quipped, “I was told not to swipe the pen.” He also signed orders officially presenting his Cabinet and several sub-Cabinet officials to Congress for their approval.

US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama dance their first dance at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball in Washington

He then joined several Congressional guests for the Inaugural Luncheon in the Capitol building’s National Statuary Hall. Guests, who included top Washington lawmakers as well as former Presidents and Vice Presidents, were served duck and pheasant with Pinot Noir.

Inaugural Luncheon at Statuary Hall

The theme of the luncheon was based on Obama’s 2009 inaugural theme, “A New Birth of Freedom,” which commemorates the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The red and white china were copies of those used in the Lincoln White House.

Inaugural Luncheon at Statuary Hall

A luncheon at the Capitol has been part of the inaugural program since 1953 (before that, the luncheon was usually held at the White House and hosted by the outgoing President and First Lady). The menu often includes dishes representative of the home states of the new President and Vice President, and in 2009 included seafood stew, a pheasant and duck dish, and apple cinnamon sponge cake with sweet cream glacé for dessert. Since 1985, a painting has been chosen to serve as a backdrop for the head table. In 2009, it was Thomas Hill’s 1865 View of the Yosemite Valley, chosen to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 signing of the Yosemite Grant, which was the first time the federal government protected park lands for public use.

During the inaugural luncheon, Senator Ted Kennedy collapsed. He suffered a seizure and was taken to a hospital to recover.Early reports erroneously suggested that Senator Robert Byrd also fell ill during the luncheon.

Parade..

The inaugural parade traveled along Pennsylvania Avenue northwestward from Capitol and ended at the north face of the White House. During the parade, Barack and Michelle Obama twice exited their limousine on Pennsylvania Avenue and walked a portion of the parade route, to the cheers of the crowds in attendance. Their second walk ended just before the gate to the White House.

Police wait at the ready before the start of the inaugural parade for US President Barack Obama in Washington

It has been traditional for the new President to walk instead of being driven, but the new armored limousine was used because of potential threats. Obama’s daughters, Malia and Sasha, traveled in his limousine and remained inside during the parade.

The cavalcade rolls down Pennsylvania Avenue following the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States

Joe and Jill Biden also walked at several points during the parade with their children, Beau, Hunter, Naomi and Ashley. Beau, Delaware’s Attorney General and a JAG officer in the Delaware Army National Guard, was given a special furlough from serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom to participate in the ceremonies.

The parade extended for over two hours in the afternoon and early evening following the inauguration. It included 15,000 people, 240 horses, dozens of marching bands, two drum and bugle corps, and a mariachi band.

A police motorcycle escort group riders ahead of the motorcade during the inaugural parade of US President Barack Obama

Obama invited the nine-time Drum Corps International (DCI) World Champion The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, the eight-time finalist Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, Iowa, and the VMI corps of cadets, as well as the high school marching band from Punahou School, his high school in Hawaii, to perform in the inaugural parade.

Vice President Joe Biden invited several groups from Delaware to march in the parade. The Delaware section was led off by the Delaware Volunteer Firemen’s Association of which Biden is an honorary member.

Next was his alma mater’s marching band, the University of Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens, known as The Pride of Delaware. The Delaware State University Hornets marching band, known as The Approaching Storm, followed.

Jennifer Lopez and her hubby Marc Anthony continue to deny the incessant gossip that their marriage is on the rocks. Despite what the rumor mills say, J-Lo insists all is well at their house. If that’s true, then why would she make the rookie mistake of leaving her wedding band at home?

Jenifer Lopez

She also did it on one of the most publicized and paparazzi heavy nights of the year. When she was spotted without the ring at the 2009 Golden Globes, the media went wild.

Jenifer Lopez

Her response, according to In Touch? “It didn’t go with the dress.”

She went on to say, “Every time I’m not wearing my ring, people think I’m getting divorced.” Hmm.. maybe it’s because if history is any indicator, you probably are.

J. Lo: “Divorce is not an option”..

J-Lo and Marc Anthony

After weeks of speculation that Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were on the verge of a split, J. Lo finally put the rumors to rest in an exclusive interview with In Touch on January 11.

Jenifer Lopez

“Every time I’m not wearing my ring, people think I’m getting divorced,” Jennifer tells In Touch. “Divorce is not — and was never — an option.” Jennifer’s close friend, Benny Medina adds that “Jennifer and Marc are committed to the future and to one another. All the rumors are just that — rumors.”

Are J. Lo and Marc Anthony Getting Divorced?..

J.Lo And Marc Anthony

Rumors have been swirling for months that Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have been having marital problems. This time around, the gossip mills seem to think that J-Lo and Marc could be headed for a divorce. The new parents have even been spotted without their wedding rings on more than one occasion.

A source told Page Six that “Lopez used to send her assistant on tour with Anthony while she stayed at home with their twins. She wanted reports back so he didn’t cheat on her.” It looks like that fancy little vow renewal ceremony in October didn’t take.

Heavy bombardment of so-called Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip - from artillery on the ground and jets overhead - continued on Saturday despite speculation that Israel will wrap up its military operations later in the day.

The death toll from the now more than three weeks of assault stands at 1,203 Palestinians killed, including more than 400 children according to UN and Palestinian medical sources.

At least 13 Israelis have also died in the same period, including three civilians.

School attacked

A Palestinian woman and a child were killed in the early hours of Saturday at the school run by the UN relief and works agency (Unrwa) in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza.

Christopher Gunness, an Unrwa spokesman, said several rounds hit the UN school at about 6:45am. After a short pause, the third floor of the school took a direct hit, killing the two and injuring another 14 people.

Witnesses said four more people were killed when other shells struck nearby as people tried to escape.

About 1,600 civilians had sought refuge from the fighting inside the building, Gunness said.

“The Israeli army knew exactly our GPS co-ordinates and they would have known that hundreds of people had taken shelter there,” he said.

“When you have a direct hit into the third floor of a UN school, there has to be an investigation to see if a war crime has been committed.”

John Ging, the director of Unrwa, told Al Jazeera: “People today are alleging war crimes here in Gaza. Lets have it properly accounted for. Lets have the legal process which will establish exactly what has happened here.

“It is another failure for our humanity and it is exposing the impotence of our [the international community's] inability to protect civilians in conflict.”

In Jabaliya refugee camp, a Palestinian doctor from al-Shifa hospital lost his three daughters and one niece during an Israeli air attack. Dr Ezzedine Abu al-Aish is a familiar voice in Israel, where he has been interviewed by local media.

At least 10 people were also killed late on Friday after a tank shell slammed into their home during a funeral wake in Gaza City.

Meanwhile, about five rockets were reported to have been fired from Gaza into southern Israel.

‘Unilateral ceasefire’

While Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip intensified on Saturday morning, with some attacks reported in the afternoon, the country’s security cabinet is expected to decide on ending the assault, Israeli sources have said.

The move would be seen as preferable to entering into an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire with Hamas, unnamed sources have said.

Tzipi Livni, Israel’s foreign minister, said on Israel’s Channel 10 television that “the end doesn’t have to be in agreement with Hamas, but rather in arrangements against Hamas”.

A unilateral ceasefire would allow Israel to avoid agreeing concessions with Hamas, such as easing the 18-month-old blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has prevented medical aid and basic supplies from reaching the Palestinians.

Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s prime minister, called for an immediate ceasefire and the removal of Israel’s troops from the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

Egypt has been pushing Israel and the rival Palestinian factions to reach an agreement, and a Hamas delegation returned to Cairo on Friday for a second round of talks.

Responding to talk of unilateral action by Israel, Hamas on Saturday threatened to ignore such a ceasefire and continue fighting.

“Clearly, we have nothing new to propose … either we hear what we have proposed [is accepted] or we will go back to the battlefield,” Osama Hamdan, Hamas’s representative in Lebanon, said.

“The [large] number of our martyrs will not push us to surrender, but to insist on resistance.”

Speaking at a forum in Beirut, Hamdan called on Arab leaders to stand by the Palestinian “resistance”, and urged European nations to cut ties with Israel for
its “crimes” in Gaza.

An unnamed Israeli official told the AFP news agency that Israeli troops would remain in Gaza in the event of any such ceasefire being called.

“If they [Hamas] decide to open fire, we will not hesitate to respond and continue the offensive,” the official was quoted as saying.

Israel’s stated aim of the war, which it dubbed Operation Cast Lead, was to halt Palestinian rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Passengers were rescued from the wings or helped from the icy water by divers.

Captain Chesley Sullenberger was praised by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his “masterful” landing.

The state governor spoke of a “miracle on the Hudson”.

The BBC’s Greg Wood reports from New York that it was a true delivery from disaster, a commercial airliner forced to ditch in the river just next to the skyscrapers of mid-town Manhattan but with no fatalities.

One person suffered two broken legs and paramedics treated 78 patients, most for minor injuries but, through a combination of luck, the skill of the pilot and a rapid emergency response, 155 people have had a very narrow escape, our correspondent says.

Air accident investigators are in New York to probe the cause of the incident.

‘Everyone counted out’

Flight 1549 departed LaGuardia en route to Charlotte, North Carolina, at 1526 local time (2026 GMT), after delays, said Laura Brown of the Federal Aviation Administration.

1 1526 local time (2026 GMT): Flight 1549 takes off from LaGuardia airport 2 1527 (2027 GMT): Pilot Chesley Sullenberger reports birds hitting engines 3 1528 (2028 GMT): Pilot told to land at Teterboro airfield 4 1531 (2031 GMT): Pilot ditches plane in Hudson River

“We believe it was airborne for three minutes after take-off when it crashed into the Hudson River,” she said.

The pilot reported a “double bird strike” less than a minute after take-off and asked to return to the ground, before ditching in the Hudson, an air controllers union spokesman said.

Ferryboats arrived within minutes of the crash to begin the rescue as passengers emerged in life jackets.

The temperature was almost -7C and the current in the Hudson was running rapidly.

The plane moved rapidly down river, threatening to submerge at one point, until guided to a halt by tug boats against a pier.

“It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river, and then making sure that everybody got out,” Mr Bloomberg said on Thursday evening.

“I had a long conversation with the pilot. He walked the plane twice after everybody else was off and tried to verify that there was nobody else onboard. And assures us there were not.”

The mayor also commended emergency services, saying: “They train for these kinds of emergencies, and you saw it in action.”

New York Governor David Paterson said: “I think that in simplicity, this is really a potential tragedy that may have become one of the most spectacular days in the history of New York City’s agencies.”

Bracing for impact

Stephanie Nachman, who works in a high-rise building in Times Square, said she had seen the plane crash.

“It wasn’t wild or erratic but if as it was landing on a runway,” she said.

Within minutes, she added, people got out, doors popped out and rafts unfurled.

Jeff Kolodjay, a passenger on the plane, described the moments before the landing:

“About three or four minutes into the flight… the left engine just blew… flames coming out of it and I was looking right at it cos I was sitting right there.

“And it just started smelling a lot like gasoline and a couple of minutes after that the pilot said ‘you guys gotta brace for a hard impact’.

“And that’s when everyone started, to be honest, saying prayers and we looked over the water and we thought we had a chance because, you know, there’s some water.”

Moments after impact, the situation inside the plane was “just controlled chaos”, said passenger Dave Sanderson, of Charlotte.

“People started running up the aisle, people were getting shoved out of the way,” he said.

Another passenger, Alberto Panero, said that a couple of people then “just kind of took charge and calmed everyone”.

The film, which was under production since September 2006, became Asin’s largest film till date. Despite being overshadowed by Haasan’s ten roles, Asin’s portrayal’s in the film were praised as her “best-to-date” with one of her roles being that of a Vaishnavite in the 12th century; whilst the other character was a Brahmin girl from Chidambaram.

Her first film, Ghajini opposite Aamir Khan was the remake of her breakthrough film of the same name.

Asin Thottumkal

Upon release, the film garnered positive reactions from critics and masses alike, with Asin being singled out for her “fabulous” portray. Noted critic, Taran Adarsh describes her Hindi debut as “fabulous” and that “to share the screen space with an actor of the stature of Aamir Khan and yet remain in your memory even after the show has ended is no cakewalk.

She looks fresh and photogenic and acts her part brilliantly”, giving Asin’s performance a positive outlook. Asin is committed to Vipul Shah’s London Dreams alongside Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, in which she plays a member of a five-troupe band. She is also committed to an International Project Titled 19th Step which is a trilingual to be made in English, Tamil and Japanese, in which she will star alongside Kamal Hassan and Japanese Actor Tadanobu Asano.

Asin And Her Line Of Cars..

Though she is only one film old in the film industry but Asin knows the art of bagging the news and dragging the media towards! She has been in news since the day one and this time around she is on the headlines again with the news that her convoy includes two cars, which have Kerela number plates. One is for her personal use and that is Toyota Camry. And the other is for her hairdresser, make-up man and assistants. Two other cars were also spotted, which carry Mumbai

numbers and they have her bodyguards on board. Wow…looks great…! She is only one film old and has a convoy of cars laced with hairdresser, make-up man, assistants and bodyguards like the big stars have.

Asin Thottumkal

When asked her, she confirms the news saying, “Calling it a convoy would be an overstatement. But yes, I have a car in which I travel with my dad who also manages me. In another car I have my hair dresser, make-up man and other assistants. They go with me wherever I go. I’m a little bit of a perfectionist, so I like them being around and overseeing things for me.”

Asin Thottumkal & Amir Khan-Ghajini

As for the other two cars spotted? “I think you saw some other cars when I was traveling for Ghajini’s romotions…I didn’t get them (whatever you say Asin…but what media spotted is right).”

I’m also quite a perfectionist: Asin

Wednesday, 24 December 2008

People often call Aamir a perfectionist and a tough taskmaster, but I didn’t have any problem matching up to him because I’m also quite a workaholic. We gelled quite well as far as the demand of perfection was concerned. Even I like things to be the best,” Asin told us over telephone from Mumbai.

Just like any other girl her age, 23-year-old Asin has been a huge Aamir fan. “I have always admired Aamir and have enjoyed his movies ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Dil Chahta Hai‘ and also loved ‘Taare Zameen Par‘. I have danced a lot on ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ songs with my friends,” she said. After working with the superstar, she says he is unlike what the media and industry project him to be.

“Shooting with Aamir was great fun. He isn’t as serious as he is projected to be. He is highly dedicated to his work but is very cool and easy to work with. He’s a simple person, very genuine and frank about his opinions despite having such a good stature in Bollywood,” said Asin.

The actress, who was brought up in Kerala and debuted in Sathyan Anthikad’s Malayalam film ‘Narendra Makan Jayakanthan Vaka’ in 2001, also starred in the Tamil version of ‘Ghajini’ released in 2005. It was in this film that she received her second South Filmfare Award for best actress.

Asin has been kept away from the promotions of the Hindi remake thanks to Aamir’s knack for keeping his cast away from the media prior to the release. But she is nonchalant. “I have not felt overshadowed by Aamir’s publicity at all. Actually, I’m not used to all this really because we don’t have it in the south film industry. The marketing team for ‘Ghajini’ has its strategy to promote the film in the right manner. If Aamir is promoting the film in the north, I am doing it in the south,” she said.

Besides, Asin believes publicity is something that would only bring people to the theaters. Liking or not liking the film is in the viewers’ hands, she said. According to her, though audiences down south have already seen and appreciated the original ‘Ghajini’, they would surely revisit theaters for Aamir’s charm. “Aamir has got a huge fan following and he is the highlight of the film. In fact, since a lot of people down south have seen the Tamil version of the film, they will now probably come to theaters just to watch Aamir. “I have no issues about that as ‘Ghajini’ is the story of Sanjay Singhania, played by Aamir. So the fact that his presence is being highlighted is completely justified,” said Asin.

As of now, the actress is “excited but anxious” of how her “new audience” will react to her performance when ‘Ghajini’ hits theaters worldwide.

Her next Bollywood release after ‘Ghajini’ would be Vipul Shah’s ‘London Dreams’ in which she stars alongside Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. She is also a part of Walt Disney’s multi-lingual project ‘19 Steps’ and would be sharing screen space with south Indian superstar Kamal Haasan and Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano.
